Updated: Aug 11, 2021

In India, every seasonal change is marked by a festival. Black carrot kanji is made by fermentation and is very cooling, yet, a very good prebiotic that is needed to beat the heat of changing weather. Thandai is also a main part of holi.

Detox for seasonal change was always needed for our system to cope with the new weather. The replacement of traditional items with newer ones is one reason we should go for detox.

Detoxification is a process to cleanse the body and get rid of any toxins or allergens that can cause inflammation in the body. Sugar and refined foods cause major digestive issues. Here are some tips to detox:

1. Detox to reduce bloating and water retention:

Reducing carb intake:

One major fact we must know is that carbohydrates retain water, so replacing normal carbs with complex carbs or reducing carb intake helps.

Adding pre- and pro-biotics:

Kanji is the best recipe to add in a mini meal to add probiotics.

Low sodium diet:

During festivals, we tend to eat snacks and sweets that make us look swollen. To balance sodium in the body, we must reduce salt intake so that our body releases the excess.

NOT EATING SALT AFTER 7 PM AND REDUCING WATER INTAKE AFTER SUNSET is the key to reduce water retention in the body.

Avoid bakery, packed food and processed food:

Bakery products make your cells dry and thus the body starts retaining water. Preservatives and baking soda further add to the water retention.

Drinking plenty of water and food that has lots of water contains:

Water is the best cleanser. Ingest water in the form of veggies and fruits and drink in the form of juice, buttermilk, etc.

Avoid caffeine and sugar:

During detox, try to avoid all forms of caffeine and sugar as it will hamper the process of detoxification.

2. Detox for fried food

Fried food can cause gastritis and acidity and can accumulate toxins in the liver. To cleanse the liver, sugarcane juice along with mint, lemon and black salt is the best. During holi, we already consume sugar, so wheat grass juice, moringana powder juice and aloe vera juice helps reduce the effect of fatty food on the liver, bloating and water retention.

3. Detox for sugary food

Removing carbs and sugar completely for a day or two would help along with adding ginger, mint tea and jasmine tea [ antioxidants ] will help in stabilizing all the free radicals that are produced due to the sugar intake.

4. Detox from alcohol

Before detoxing from alcohol, one must understand that if you are on BP medicine, cholesterol management medicine, blood thinners, diarrhea, cough and cold medicine, arthritis medication, antibiotics, sleep medicine or painkillers, consuming alcohol can worsen your condition and can even land you in hospital, so please keep this in mind.

Alcohol can cause the body to turn acidic. Thus, one must go on an alkaline diet for at least 3-4 days. One must include a lot of salad and green veggies along with lemon mint and black saltwater, while avoiding things acidic in nature, such as dairy, sugar, caffeine, etc

.
